Association Ambassador Carla Lockhart MLA hosted the Northern Ireland launch tonight in Parliament Buildings, Belfast.

The Ribbon of Poppies U.K. & Commonwealth is an Annual Campaign aimed at encouraging communities to create a living memorial to those who served by planting poppy seeds.

Speaking following the event Carla Lockhart said “I have been involved in some recent projects headed up by the Ancre Somme Association and have nothing but praise for the work they are doing across the United Kingdom.”

“As each year passes we are losing more and more of our veterans and it is important that future generations have an understanding regarding the sacrifice that was made for the freedom we all take for granted today.”

“The pledges of support have already been incredible and I would encourage everyone to get behind this campaign, take what you have heard tonight back to your local communities, groups, schools and organisations.”

Others speakers at the events included Ancre Somme Association Patron, Lt Col Ant Maher, Ribbon Of Poppies U.K. & Commonwealth Regional Coordinator, Lexi Davidson and Honorary President David Martin.

These three speakers gave an insight into the Association, updated those in attendance regarding the current status of this years campaign and finally spoke about the charity, VETERANS WITH DOGS, as a donation from each packet of their bespoke poppy seeds will go to this charity who support veterans suffering with PTSD.

The event came to a close with local singer, Mark Savage, singing two self penned songs. Mark’s grandfather died during the Great War and his songs were very emotional and thought provoking.

Special guests at the event included Carol Walker MBE, Rosemary Barton MLA, Jim Wells MLA and Jonny Buckley MLA.

The Ancre Somme Association would like to thank everyone that attended tonight’s launch. A special thanks to Carla Lockhart MLA, Mark Savage and all the staff at Parliament Buildings who helped ensure the event passed off successfully.
